Thanksgiving not forgotten...

I was reading Beth Moore's Blog last night. Her daughter, Amanda, posts blogs on there and she put a link to something she had heard on Family Life Today with Dennis and Barbara Rainey. They were talking about her book, Thanksgiving: A Time to Remember. I proceeded to listen to the interview. It was a very good interview about the importance of Thanksgiving and really got me thinking. Going into the store the other day did get me excited about Christmas, but have we forgotten about Thanksgiving? A day to thank God for how He has blessed us? Thanksgiving seems to now be a hidden holiday between Halloween and Christmas, but I think it was one of the most important holidays. A day that, like my friend Abby said, "doesn't come with expectations like the other big days. No one is waiting to open their gift or admiring the new stuff. It is simply a day to be with family and recount all of the blessings God has given us so abundantly." It is a day with historical and spiritual emphasis; a rich holiday in terms of faith and the historical perspective of our nation, courage of the pilgrims and what they did to form a new nation, a day to learn from lessons of the past, and a day to do what the holiday is all about – give thanks! Thanksgiving is a day to call our hearts to give thanks, to cultivate our hearts to be grateful. One idea they gave in the interview was to, on Thanksgiving Day, have each family member write down something they are truly grateful for. So, I am going to buy a special Thanksgiving notebook to keep for years to come and each Thanksgiving Day, we will write down something we are truly grateful for. I think it will be something special to look back on each year. I'm such a sentimental person, and I get even more sentimental during this time of year. But I don't think that's a bad thing...do you?

I am so thankful for what God has done in my life and in my family. So from now until Thanksgiving, I am going to find something to be truly thankful for each day. Since it is already November 2, here are two things that I am truly grateful for:

1.) I am truly grateful for God sending His Son, Jesus, to come to earth as a babe, in flesh form, for sending Him to die on the cross to save me from my sins, and for sending His Holy Spirit to live in me after Jesus' ascension into Heaven until He returns.

2.) I am truly grateful for my loving husband who provides for our family and loves so unconditionally. He works so hard and is a wonderful father to our children. But most of all, He loves Jesus and that is the most important thing. I am so thankful to have a husband to loves the Lord and is willing to serve Him all of his days.

What are you thankful for?

You're so sweet. We have a "Book of Thanks" here as well. Now that Beth is old enough, I'll have her dictate her entry. Glad I'm not alone in this crusade to remember Thanksgiving. Sieze the Turkey!

Do you remember the "praise journal" we kept for several years? It was actually just a BIG piece of butcher paper and for several years we would write everything we were thankful for. I have that stored away somewhere. I need to find it, huh?

Today (and everyday!)I'm so thankful for my family and the wonderful relationships we share!

Mom - Yes, I do remeber that LONG piece of butcher paper. I had forgotten about that! We need to find it and pull it out.

What a neat idea! I think I will do that too!

I like the idea of bringing Thanksgiving back up to its original glory. I too will post something I am thankful for every day this month. Yay!
