Hot Tub Gazebo to Storage Building - almost!

My parents had a gazebo in their back yard with a hot tub. Well, Dad's had a lot of trouble with the hot tub and it mainly just took up space, because they rarely used it! So Dad had this idea just recently to sell the hot tub and turn the gazebo into a storage building/workshop for himself. All they had to do was add some walls and some windows. Seemed easy enough to me. My hubby Jim, and Dad decided to use the long weekend this past weekend to do just that. They had to change out some of the posts or something - at least that's what it kinda looked like they were doing. Anyway, to make a really long story short, Jim yanked on something while Dad was under the roof and it collapsed. Just one side of it though. Jim said he'd never seen Dad hit the ground so fast. I asked Dad why he didn't just run out and he said that there was no running out. He just dropped to the ground and put his arms over his face. Praise the Lord no one was injured. I mean, it could've been really bad. What's funny is that the kids were standing at the back door watching them work. Then the girl walks over and states matter-of-factly in a very calm voice, "Oh my goodness, that roof just fell." But it wasn't in a rushed voice. Just a calm gently one. If I had seen that happen, I would freaked out. Anyway. As she says this, Mom and I jump up and run over to the door.

After all of that happened, they decided to try to lift it up. Slowly. Using some heavy duty lifts and jacks. Well, it wasn't going to work. Jim and Dad's neighbor finally convinced Dad to just tear it all down and start over; which is what Mom and I wished they had done in the beginning. Now, this was a whole afternoon ordeal. Mom was seriously sick to her stomach. She wanted to leave the house so she didn't have to watch. I told her that we couldn't leave because we would have to be the ones to call 911 and get the fireman to come rescue them if the roof collapsed completely. I wasn't going to leave. The skin around my nails are peeling now from me biting and picking at them that afternoon. It was nerve-wracking!

So they finally decided to tear it down. Well, it was almost dark by then mind you. My parents share a fence with the neighbor behind them, so they had to be really careful tearing the rest of this thing down. Dad's neighbor used the winch on his Jeep and pulled it down and away from the neighbor's fence. Then Dad and Jim began the demolition of the gazebo that was going to be used as a workshop.

Here are some pictures. I used the camera on my new phone so sorry if they aren't very clear. And I didn't have a flash for the nighttime ones.

They now have most the frame up from the walls and the roof. It has ended up not being the long weekend project they expected it to be, but now it's going to a really nice workshop! I'll post some more pictures soon!

I'm so glad they are okay!! I bet the back yard looks weird now! Is Dad still going to build the workshop in that shape?

Good post...but you left out the funniest part! Remember when Cullen was standing by the back door watching all of this take place....he put his hand to his ear like it was a phone and said, "911, 911, call 911!!!!!!
